Here are 10 ideas to enjoy an autumn break on a beach holiday in winter:
Situated just 100 meters from Brean Sands Beach, Holiday Resort Unity offers the perfect location for a traditional beach holiday, even in winter.
Our season stretches from February through November, for all holiday home owners at Holiday Resort Unity and Brightholme, but owners at Brean Country Club have all year access to their holiday lodges.
While we may not always have "beach days" for sunshine and sandcastles, the Somerset coast transforms beautifully in the off-season. Many visitors prefer the quieter times when the adjoining beaches of Berrow and Burnham-on-Sea offer a different, tranquil charm.
Dog Friendly Beach Walks
On a crisp, sunny day, a walk along the beach is unbeatable. All the beaches are dog-friendly out of season, so bring your four-legged friends and enjoy the seven miles of golden sands. Even without a dog, the expansive beach is perfect for a peaceful stroll. Warm up afterwards with a cup of a hot coffee and a slice of cake at our dog-friendly cafe, COAST, over at BreanLeisure Park or dog friendly lounge at Brean Country Club
Calm Your Mind
The quiet of an autumnal seaside resort offers the perfect escape from the everyday. The coast is known for promoting positive mental health, with studies showing the benefits of being by the sea. The sound of waves can lull you into a deeply relaxed state, rejuvenating the mind and body. Whether you choose to walk or simply sit with a hot flask of tea, watching the horizon is a great way to refocus and recharge.
Beachcombing
Beachcombing is great fun for all ages, and you never know what treasures you might find—shells, driftwood, sea glass, pebbles, and seaweed are all there to be discovered. Turn it into a competition for the kids or make a list of items to find and tick them off as you go.
Get Creative
The isolation of a beach in the off-season is ideal for creativity. Whether you’re into photography, painting, or simply want to experiment with something new, the unique landscapes without the summer crowds provide the perfect backdrop.
Storm Watching
Burnham-on-Sea has the second-highest tidal range in the world, offering fantastic storm-watching opportunities during the autumn and winter. Just be sure to watch from a safe distance.
Enjoy Local Events
October brings the annual Hydrogarden Weston Beach Race in Weston-super-Mare, featuring beach racing, a trading village, trials and BMX demonstrations, and meet-and-greet sessions with star riders. November is Somerset Carnival Season, with the biggest illuminated carnival in Europe parades in Bridgwater, followed by Burnham and Weston attracting thousands of visitors.
Beach Games
The off-season is perfect for beach games with family or friends. Kite flying, rounders, beach volleyball, and cricket are all great ways to stay active and warm.
Winter Picnics
Why not enjoy a winter picnic? Wrap up warm, bring a blanket, and savour the views. Heat up your food at your holiday home before heading to the beach, or grab a takeaway from many of our restaurants and you’ll have a warm meal ready when you arrive. A winter barbecue or toasting marshmallows on a campfire can also make for a cosy and memorable meal.
Stargazing
Cold nights usually mean clear skies, perfect for stargazing. With the nights drawing in earlier during the autumn and winter, it’s a great activity for the whole family. Just remember to take a torch and wrap up warm.
Wildlife Watching
The Somerset coast is well-known for its wildlife, especially during the winter when thousands of migratory birds visit. It’s one of the best times for bird watching, and you might spot some wild animals, particularly if you walk up Brean Down.
Brent Knoll
Brent Knoll was once known as the mount of frogs, dating back to before the Somerset Levels were drained. While we can’t guarantee you’ll see any frogs, we can say it makes for a lovely climb. Visit Somerset describes the walk as “moderate” with “footpaths that rise steeply”.
